Commission A Painting

Commissioning a painting is an experience that most art lovers enjoy. If by chance my current body of work doesn't quite fit your visual requirements, then a commission is definitely the way to go. This is where you can request to have the view or subject matter painted to a size and color scheme that is more to your liking.

"Western Carolina Grandeur", 38 x 60, oil on linen, Wade Hampton Golf Course, Cashiers NC. 2015, is a great example of the type of commission work I enjoy doing. The grand view feature painting for over a fireplace, looking into the rising sun with lots of atmosphere.

Taking this image for example, "Sunset Hill" a 34 x 38 oil on linen completed in 2011. The customer was trying to satisfy both his love for this view and his wife's love of the dramatic skys that I tend to paint. Keeping this in mind I watched the weather and when it appeared to be a "dramatic cloud day" we met on location and discussed in a matter of minutes exactly what he wished the painting to be. As luck would have it I was able to capture a great little plein air with line sketches for scale and after he signed off on the full size mock up we were off to the races.

THE PROCESS

To get started either stop by the gallery, call me or drop an email. Do not worry about having all of your ideas together when you call but general direction always helps what types of color schemes you like, the different handling of light can change a painting dramatically, for instance "I love the blue sky and cloud structure in August Anthem, but I would prefer our family farm to the marshes".

PRICING

Prices vary with subject matter, but basically I structure it on canvas size and will be happy to quote you a ballpark number.

TIME LINE
Another difficult variable to nail down, though one should plan on 2 months, start to finish and on the wall. "Western Carolina Grandeur" took 3 months.

TRAVEL?
Yes, I will be happy to go. All travel and lodging is paid for by the client, a cost that is not included in the price of the painting. As long as we are committed to doing a painting there is no "daily" rate charge.

FINE PRINT
Of course as the artist the painting still needs to fit my high standards of uncompromising compositional creativity. I retain all copyrights to every image, sketch, photograph and preparatory work. My time is very valuable to me, there are no refunds for a change of heart, mind or act of God.
